Luis de la Fuente was named Men’s Coach of the Year at the 2026 Ballon d’Or ceremony in London. The award recognises the Spain national-team manager’s work and puts a spotlight on the strategic decisions, preparation and leadership that shape elite football beyond the players who take the headlines.

Coaching awards can be difficult to judge because the work often happens away from the camera. Selection, tactical planning, training-ground detail and the ability to build trust across a squad all contribute to a team’s performance. De la Fuente’s recognition acknowledges the importance of those elements in turning individual ability into a functioning collective.

International management brings a distinct set of pressures. Unlike club coaches, national-team managers have limited time with their players and must build a clear identity around short camps and major tournament windows. They also need to balance established stars with emerging talent while adapting plans to different opponents.

The award was one of several coaching honours presented during the ceremony. Barcelona’s Pere Romeu received the women’s coaching prize, illustrating the breadth of the event’s recognition across the game. The awards underline that coaching excellence is not confined to one style, league or competition.

De la Fuente’s accolade gives Spain another moment of recognition on a night when several Spanish figures were honoured. For supporters, the prize is a reminder that football success is rarely produced by talent alone. Leadership, organisation and a clear plan can be just as decisive as a spectacular goal or a match-winning save.
