2 min readFabrizio Romano says there are, for now, no active conversations between Alisson Becker and Liverpool over a new contract, a update that puts fresh focus on how the club intends to handle one of the most important positions on the pitch over the next two years.
Liverpool already exercised a 12-month extension clause in Alisson's existing deal earlier this year, which secures his services until June 2027. That clause has now been used, meaning any further stay beyond that date would require a brand new agreement rather than another automatic extension.
Why the timing matters
Romano, speaking on his own channel, suggested any movement on a fresh deal is more likely in the summer of 2027 than in the near term. That leaves Liverpool with a little under two years to decide whether Alisson remains their long-term No. 1 or whether the club leans more quickly on the goalkeeper they signed as his eventual successor.
That successor, Giorgi Mamardashvili, arrived at Anfield with a strong reputation but has looked unconvincing in his early appearances, with question marks particularly around his command of the box and distribution under pressure — both areas where Alisson has set an exceptionally high bar.
The case for patience
Unlike outfield players, elite goalkeepers routinely perform at the highest level well into their late thirties, which gives Liverpool more room than the current contract uncertainty might suggest. Letting Alisson's situation drift for too long, however, risks exactly the kind of instability between the posts that has undone title challenges elsewhere in the past.
